Guy Fawkes Night, also known as Bonfire Night, is almost upon us once again.
Once celebrated in order to commemorate the prevention of a terror attack by Guy Fawkes himself, the night is now a fun way for friends and family to get together and enjoy fires, fireworks, and delicious food.

- Enjoy a spectacular show of Autumn Lights at Elvington Airfield
On Monday 4th November 2024, Elvington Airfield is hosting the touring firework show, Autumn Lights. Set to be a festive occasion, there will be two amazing firework displays set to music from around the world.
Not only this, but the family-friendly event will also play host to:
- Walkabout entertainers
- Live dance and music performances
- Fire-eaters
- An array of street food stalls
- An LED drumming display.
Autumn Lights will run between 4 pm and 10 pm and is open to people of all ages. Tickets should be purchased in advance online to avoid being disappointed – this is sure to be a memorable evening full of amazing sights.
- Embark on a family-friendly learning experience at the York Bonfire Walk
On Sunday 3rd November between 2 pm and 4 pm, meet your tour guides to experience the Bonfire Walk at High Petergate.
Open to children aged six and above, the Bonfire Walk comprises an hour-long fire-powered walk teaching participants about York’s “explosive” history.
The walk covers a huge array of historical events including:
- Volcanoes
- Flaming cathedrals
- Second world war bombing missions
- Roman soldiers
- Guy Fawkes himself, who was from York.
Sure to be an educational and fun afternoon for inquisitive children and adults alike, the Bonfire Walk is a cost-effective event that marks Guy Fawkes Night with a historical twist.

- Experience a baby- and dog-friendly Bonfire Night Bonanza at Yolk Farm
Every year, Yolk Farm in Minskip hosts its Bonfire Night Bonanza suitable for anyone with sensory sensitivities, including young children and dogs. This is an important event that takes an inclusive approach to an often-overwhelming time of year for many people and their four-legged friends.
Held this year on Saturday 2nd November, attendees can expect to enjoy:
- Hot drinks and toasted marshmallows
- An impressive bonfire (but no fireworks)
- A bar and street food for all to enjoy
- Yolk Farm’s Yard Play Barn, which will remain open for children to enjoy.
Gates open at 5.30 pm and the bonfire is lit at 6.30 pm. Under-1s and pets go free, and you can purchase tickets online in advance to ensure entry.
- Attend a classic Bonfire Night display at Sandburn Hall
The beautiful Sandburn Hall in Flaxton is hosting a classic Guy Fawkes’ Night evening on Friday 1st November 2024.
Complete with a firework display, bonfire, entertaining fire breathers and performers, and a range of food and drink on offer, this is sure to be an enjoyable evening set in the stunning countryside.
Gates will be opened at 5 pm, so it may be best to arrive early and avoid the queues. The epic firework display will start at 7.30 pm, but in the meantime, there’s plenty to explore and enjoy for children and adults of all ages.
