Indeed, our county offers an unparalleled array of activities for all ages and interests. Whether you’re seeking outdoor adventure, a cultural experience, or simply a relaxing escape, there’s plenty around to keep you entertained.
Here are nine ideas for things to do in Yorkshire this summer.
- Explore the Yorkshire Dales National Park
Summer is the perfect time to immerse yourself in the beautiful landscapes of the Yorkshire Dales.
Lace up your walking boots and tackle iconic routes such as the ascent to Malham Cove, an ancient amphitheatre with a unique limestone pavement at its summit. This amazing location even appeared in the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows film.
From here you can also explore the picturesque Janet’s Foss waterfall and Gordale Scar.
For more information on walks and activities, visit the Yorkshire Dales National Park website.
- Step back in time at York Minster
No visit to our home city is complete without experiencing the awe-inspiring York Minster. This Gothic cathedral is a masterpiece of stained glass and stone and offers a journey through centuries of history.
The cathedral often hosts summer events, so be sure to check their calendar for information about its services, concerts, and exhibitions.
- Explore Flamingo Land Resort for some thrills
For a fun-filled family day out, Flamingo Land Resort combines a theme park with a large zoo. Here you can experience everything from thrilling rides to animal encounters. There’s something for everyone to enjoy.
Look out for their special summer events and be sure to plan your trip by visiting their website beforehand.
- Discover coastal charms and seaside delights
Yorkshire’s stunning coastline offers a diverse range of experiences. Head to Whitby for its Gothic abbey ruins, charming cobbled streets, and famous fish and chips.
Explore the dramatic clifftops around Flamborough Head with its lighthouses and abundant seabird life or enjoy the sandy beaches of Bridlington and Hornsea.

- Get hands-on at Eureka! The National Children’s Museum
Located in Halifax, Eureka! The National Children’s Museum is an excellent destination for children aged 0 – 11, offering exciting and interactive learning opportunities.
The museum has six zones of exhibitions designed to spark your little one’s curiosity and imagination, and it’s the ideal indoor activity if you want to escape the heat (or rain!) for a while.
This summer, the museum is hosting a “Six Weeks of Summer Fun” programme, with daily activities and workshops. The programme will run from 19 July to 1 September 2025, so be sure to book your visit today.
- Wander through the World Heritage Site of Fountains Abbey
The Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Park site was one of the first places in the UK to be named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located near Ripon, the ruins of Fountain Abbey and the Studley Royal Water Garden represent 800 years of incredible history.
Spend the day exploring the vast grounds, admire the architectural beauty, and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere for a moment of peace. There are also play areas for children and several walking trails to enjoy.
Details on opening times and admissions can be found on the National Trust website.
- Immerse yourself in literary history at the Brontë Parsonage Museum
Dive into the world of the Brontë sisters at the Brontë Parsonage Museum in Haworth. Once home to Charlotte, Emily, and Anne Brontë, the museum offers a fascinating insight into their lives and works.
Throughout the summer, the museum hosts special events and workshops, including “Wild Wednesday”, which is a series of free arts and crafts workshops open to children accompanied by an adult.
See their website for details about their current exhibitions and events.
- Indulge in Yorkshire’s food and drink scene
Summer is a great time to sample the best of Yorkshire’s home-grown produce. For local attractions, keep an eye out for farmers’ markets and food festivals across the county.
The Filey Food Festival, which takes place on 9 and 10 August 2025 and hosts over 65 stalls, showcases the very best of Yorkshire food and drink. You’ll also have the opportunity to try out exciting street foods and a real ale bar.
For more information about the Filey Food Festival, see the Visit North Yorkshire website.
You can also enjoy the Yorkshire Dales Cheese Festival, which is a week-long cheese-lover’s dream. Enjoy tastings, farm tours, cheese and wine pairings, and workshops across the Dales at various locations.
- Explore the heart of rural Yorkshire at a traditional agricultural show
Summer in Yorkshire wouldn’t be complete without the sights, sounds, and smells of a traditional agricultural show. Connect with your local community, see impressive displays of livestock and farming skills, and sample the finest local produce with one of these excellent Dales shows:
Wensleydale Show – Leyburn – Saturday 23 August 2025. Just minutes from Akebar Park holiday park, this traditional show offers a full day of entertainment for all. From exciting sheepdog trials to vintage tractor displays, it’s a great opportunity to see the best of Wensleydale.
Kilnsey Show – Wharfedale – Tuesday 26 August 2025. With over a century of history under its belt, the Kilnsey Show is a highlight for many on the Dales Calendar. Beyond the usual livestock and produce, you can witness exciting fell running races, sheep shearing demonstrations, and even the thrill of watching harness racing.
Nidderdale Show – Pateley Bridge – Sunday 21 September 2025. Held in a beautiful riverside location in Pateley Bridge, this late-summer show brings together farmers, local food producers, and craftspeople from across the Dales. Celebrate rural life and enjoy a vibrant community gathering to see the summer out.
