John Whiting

Adviser Development Manager

"The three things I love most about my job are working with dedicated and highly qualified Financial Planners who still welcome development to improve their skills further. Also the "can do" positive attitude prevalent throughout the company starting with the Directors down to the newest member of staff. The friendship, camaraderie and banter within the office, I would go a long way for all of them even if they do support some dodgy teams! "

Work

John previously worked at Lloyds Bank for 42 years and retired in 2016. After six months of climbing the walls in retirement, John got a call from Deb Jacobs, who rescued him, and he joined PenLife in May 2017!

John’s role as an Adviser Development Manager involves undertaking regular one-to-one development meetings with our Financial Planners. John also observes them in live client meetings with a view to developing their interview techniques further.

Rest and play

The main focus at home for John at present is his Golden Retriever, Darcy.

Initially not wanting a dog, John finally gave way to his wife’s puppy dog eyes and caved in. It’s now fair to say that John talks about little else but Darcy!

When not following Darcy around, John loves his sport, particularly Rugby League and football.

John is also into music and reading.

John in the spotlight

On an ideal weekend, you can find me:

Watching Hull FC or listening out for Hull City’s result. Darcy would also be demanding my attention at some stage, so I may treat my wife, Mo, to a walk and a nice pub lunch. And I like my downtime at home to catch up on my reading or a Sudoku puzzle.

My favourite holiday destination is:

Anywhere with a bit of heat and a bit of history.

The first album I bought was:

A Hard Day’s Night, The Beatles.

If I could be any fictional character, I would be:

Jack Reacher.

If I could turn any activity into an Olympic sport, I would win a medal in:

Sleeping. (My wife says I could sleep on a clothesline…)

My pet peeve is:

Lateness.

The best gift I’ve ever received is:

My family.

The three people at my dream dinner party would be:

David Gilmour from Pink Floyd, Hillary Clinton, and Bob Dylan.

The three small things that make my day better are:

Nice food, a good laugh, and a quiet five minutes.

Three things I haven’t done so far include:

See Hull City win the FA Cup, go to Washington DC, and treat my wife Mo to an exotic holiday.
